Stop Writing Down Your Goals

Write your goals down if you want to achieve them.  This is conventional wisdom. It's also useless advice!

If you have to write down your goal and look at it every day it's not big enough or important enough.  Don't just try to make your goals S.M.A.R.T. - make them matter!

Example: My Mission Statement

Take daily action to create opportunities that align with my V.I.P's (Values, Interest, Priorities) to improve my life and add value to the lives of those around me.

I don't have that mission statement plastered on a wall  or my computer screen.  In fact, this is the only place I've ever written it.  Yet, I live by it everyday.  Every goal I set, every decision I make is based on those words.  

I don't have to look at it, or memorize it word for word because it is based on only 2 things:

  1. What is most important to me - my V.I.P's
  2. My belief in the value of investing in both myself and others

When working with clients, I focus on helping them find their own V.I.P's and developing new skills.  Sure, we talk about workouts and what kind of foods to eat but those things are often secondary to achieving their goals. ​

We start by figuring out what's important to them and why.  Once we know that, the focus is on taking daily actions that align with their V.I.Ps.  As we get into the coaching process, my clients often discover that the skills they are learning through those daily actions can be used to create success in many areas of their life.

My simple 3-step process for achieving your goals

  1. Figure out your V.I.P's
  2. Start taking immediate, daily action or hire someone to help you get started
  3. Review regularly, make outcome-based decision, and tweak as needed
