I Struggled To Lose Weight & Keep It Off Until I Realized That Everything I Was Taught About Burning Fat Was Wrong!

It was the Summer of 2009, I was 245 lbs, the heaviest I'd ever been in my entire life.

I was in a destructive loop. I'd start a new workout and diet, lose a few pounds, fall off said diet due to cravings, stopped working out, regained all the weight and then some.

By the time that Summer came around, I had tried almost every diet plan in existence at the time.  No matter the diet, the results were always the same - my results would plateau and I'd get frustrated and cheat on my diet. 

I couldn't understand it, I was diligent about counting my calories and staying in a caloric deficient, just what I had been told to do.

That year I learned the first big lie about burning fat and losing weight.

The 1st Big Lie - Calories In Vs. Calories Out Is All That Matters

As it turns out, calorie counting isn't all that exact.  Food companies may use any of 5 different methods to estimate calories, so the FDA permits inaccuracies of up to 20%.  That means your 2,000 calorie day could really be anywhere between 1600-2400 calories.

Inaccuracies aside, weight loss does still fundamentally boil down to calories in vs calories out.  However, it turns out that the calorie deficit itself isn't nearly as important as supplying your body the right amount of energy to function optimally.

Let's say you need 2,000 calories per day to maintain your weight and you consume 1,500.  You would be at a 500 calorie deficit each day and should theoretically lose a pound per week.  This is exactly what I was trying to do and it's what got me in trouble.

Instead, let's say I burned an extra 1,000 calories through exercise.  That would mean I burned 3,000 calories (2,000 that I burn no matter what + the additional 1,000 from exercise).  If I upped my intake to 2,500 calories, I'd still have a 500 calorie deficit but my body would have more nutrients to feed my muscles and keep things running smoothly - a true win win.

The 2nd Big Lie - Cardio Is The King Of Fat Burning

Once I realized that I needed to fuel my body with enough calories while upping my activity levels, I turned to the darling of the weight loss community - Cardio!

Funny thing is, no matter how much time I spent sweating away on the treadmill, elliptical or bike, I wasn't seeing the results I wanted.  It was frustrating to say the least and I was about ready to throw in the towel and decide that being fat wasn't so bad.

That's when I meet one of my first mentors, another trainer named Rob. Rob showed me that the secret to burning more calories - and fat - was to lift weights.  Strength training, when combined with the right nutrition plan, helps build lean muscle mass, which in turn increases your metabolism - even when you are at rest.

Not only does strength training help you increase your metabolism by building lean muscle, research has shown that calorie burn can be increased for up to 48 hours after an intense weight lifting session.

The 3rd Big Lie - You Have To Be All-In If You Want To Get Results

I'd be willing to bet that the number one reason must people give up on their weight loss efforts is 1 bad day.  Let's keep it real, we try to be perfect but those cravings get you - I know they got me on way more than one occasion.  Next thing you know, one bad meal turns into a bad day, then a bad week, and then we're done.

Once I understood exactly how to fuel my body and how to properly train it, accepting that perfection is not necessary became the final piece of the puzzle that helped me to drop 80 lbs.  

Over the years, my most successful clients are about 80-90% consistent with both their workouts and nutrition.  I share this with you because I think the number one reason people never start is they think they have to be perfect and they know that isn't going to happen.

    Calories In vs. Calories Out is All That Matters. A calorie deficit is necessary to lose weight but creating a deficit with a higher calorie intake gives your body the fuel it needs to perform at an optimal level.

    Cardio is the King of Fat Burning. While cardio has it's place in a workout, strength training will help you burn more fat by building lean muscle mass and increasing your metabolism.

    You Have to be Perfect to Get Results. The pressure of eating a perfect diet and never missing a workout can cause one bad day to lead to quitting.  80-90% consistency with the right plan and a strong support system produces results 100% of the time.
